4-Wheel Balloon CarDesign
Go, go, go, go, go, yay! I'm Nate from Design Squad
and I'm here with: All of us are designing
different balloon cars. It's got a carton for a body, a half a plastic cup, four foam balls for wheels. I think big DVD wheels
will roll really easy. Go! NATE:
When we release the balloon...

(Laughing) the rubber on the balloon
squeezes the air out... (Squeaking) which makes the balloon go... It goes everywhere
and it's crazy. NATE: Now we're going to add
a straw, because what it does is it makes the balloon go from
going in a crazy direction...

To a straight direction. The propulsion technology
we're using here is a lot like a jet or a rocket. When the balloon squeezes air
out the nozzle, it makes thrust in
the opposite direction that makes the balloon and
the car want to go that way. ANNA:
Racers ready.

(Panting) On your marks, get set... Go! NATE: I just can't get
mine to go straight. DESI:
I don't really think it was because it
would go like that. I think it was because
it would go like that.

NATE: I think you might
be onto something. This side to side motion
made it not go straight. So I took this front axle,
and I changed its angle just a little bit so hopefully it corrected it
and now it goes straight. A.J., I challenge you! Racers, get your engines pumped! Go! (Yells) Oh, now they're both going.

Good race. Go. Go, go, go, go, go! Yay! I won! I have an idea of how we can
scale this up a little bit. What I've got here is
a fire extinguisher attached to a tricycle.

Balloon car. But with a little more pressure
involved. So let's try this out. Go! NATE: Now, the balloon cars
used a jet of air to move.

There's lots of other things
around that use jets of air: a fire extinguisher,
a jet pack and a jet. Whoo! Don't try this at home. Just make a balloon car at home. (Kids cheering) NATE: Instructions to build

1st place Mousetrap Car Ideas- using SCIENCE

1st place Mousetrap
This is a mousetrap car. They're common for competitions in high school physics classes. Just like the egg drop challenge or building toothpick bridges. The goal is to build a car that travels the furthest or goes the Fastest, but in either case the only power provide to move the car is from a single...

Mousetrap. So today I'm going to show you how to win first place by building some cars with the World-record holder. Then we're gonna go to the West Coast Championships to see all these principles in action, and wait don't leave! I know that 99.7% Of you have never, nor will ever make one of these, but I will break down in simple terms how I know this car will go twice as far as this one, and then I'll prove it. And then we'll discuss why you see these DVD wheels so often, but do they work? And why do some winning cars have wheels that look like this? But before we fly all the way out the Texas to meet the world record holder, I need to lay the foundation for the one overarching fundamental physics principle behind the mousetrap car.

It's called mechanical advantage and to do that I'm gonna need my niece and nephews. "Imma bet you guys I could lift my car off the ground using just my pinkies. If I can't do it, you can have this crisp Benjamin but if I can, you guys have to buy me ice cream. Deal?" "I said nothing else but your Pinky!" "I am using just my pinkies.

"No just your pinkies." "That's what I'm doing!" "This is really good you guys. Thank you." If you're willing to move a greater distance. You're able to reduce the amount of force and by a proportional amount. I can't lift 500 pounds worth of car one time.

But I could lift 10 pounds 50 times. A mechanical advantage is the ratio of the output force over the input force. So in this case it's 50. That means my hand had to travel 50 times further than just lifting the car in one shot.

But the weight was 50 times less, so it was totally worth it. This principle of mechanical advantage is everywhere. Let's take a look at a few examples. If I have 4 pulleys that means I have to pull the rope down 4 times further than the dumbbell goes up.

But in exchange, it feels four times lighter, so this has a mechanical advantage of 4. For the ramp you look at the ratio of the length to the height. Your mechanical advantage therefore is 2.2. And that means I have to travel a little further, But the brick should feel 2.2 Times lighter pulling up the ramp versus just pulling the brick straight up.

And sure enough if you measure each with a scale This is exactly what you see. If you think about it a screw is just a ramp wrapped around a nail. So here you look at this has traveled around the thread and divided by the space in between the threads to get a mechanical advantage of 9 And as you know if you really want to multiply your force use a ratchet wrench Now that is since your hand travels for one full rotation is 300 times longer than the distance the screw moves vertically between one thread the total mechanical advantage is 300 It's like a really long short ramp So if this scale reads 6 pounds the actual clamping force would be 300 times more or nearly a ton And with wheels and axles it's the same story since this wheel diameter is twice what this one is as you could probably guess by now this weight weighs twice as much so now we're balanced with a mechanical advantage of 2 And you'll also notice if I move this [the bigger wheel] the lesser weight travels twice as far and finally we have levers Which is where we started with my niece and nephews, here if you compare the ratio of the distances from the pivot point we have A mechanical advantage of 4 which of course means I have to move this end four times further But it's super easy because it's 1/4 the weight on this side, and in all of these examples Which you see everywhere around us you trade lower force for more distance traveling This is how humans built amazing things before all these fancy machines with engines came around Human muscles are totally strong enough as long as you're willing to spend a little more distance to do the task, and so this principle Mechanical advantage is at play over and over again with the mousetrap cars only in reverse. It works both ways in other words I don't want the full force of the spring acting over this tiny distance to act directly on the wheels or they would spin out That would be a very inefficient Transfer of energy from the spring, so we use mechanical advantage and make the main lever arm 15 times longer than the spring lever arm, and in the wheel diameter is 24 times bigger than the wheel axle so then if we multiply them our total mechanical advantage is 1 over 360.

That means the force is 360 times less right here on the output at the wheels to the floor Versus right here on the input on the spring. It also means will travel 360 times further than the distance this spring arm rotates. All right So that's enough of a foundation for now let's go to Texas and meet up with my buddy Al, to build some racecars USA Not only is he the mousetrap car world record holder, but he also kind of started the whole thing, and he was Texas high school physics teacher of the year, and since my dream job is to one day switch from working as an engineer In the private sector, to go teach high school physics somewhere. I made him show me all his cool demos.

I came up with this idea back in 1991 and since that time I have literally built thousands and thousands of mousetrap cars myself I've seen every possible engineering design you could ever come up with There's lots of different variations for rules for a mousetrap car race. Let's talk about how to build the best Long-distance car first for our testing we started with three identical cars the only difference was the length of the lever arm So one was short one was medium, and one was long, and I've calculated each of their mechanical advantages Which you can see written here given what we know about mechanical advantage. What do you think is about to happen? As you might have guessed the short lever arm car takes a strong early lead this makes sense because it has the largest mechanical advantage therefore the highest force Where the wheels and ground meet the downside is that it's a short-lived burst and the medium and long lever arm cars pass it once? It's quickly used up all its energy In the end this is how far they each traveled with the longest lever arm car going the slowest but making it all the way to 30 feet this brings up the first principle for the long distance car to win you won the smallest possible force over the longest possible Distance in other words the smallest fraction for mechanical advantage possible you want your car to be barely creeping forward To waste as little energy as possible You think as a total energy of the spring as this amount of water in this cup and then this cup represents the amount of energy that's passed on to your car to move it forward if you just quickly dump it all the energy a ton spills and splashes out this will be due to losses from extra heat generated or even drag force from the wind which is proportional To your velocity squared, but if you do it slowly and more controlled much more energy Goes to actually moving your car forward the next thing we tested was adding Graphite to the axles on all three of the cars, and then we raced them This made a huge difference and now they went this far Again the longest lever arm car one because it was the slowest but this shows the importance of dealing with friction It's definitely your biggest enemy with these cars and the friction comes from two spots You have the rolling friction between the wheels and the ground and then the biggie is between their axles and the car body This is why we put the lubricating graphite powder there to take our testing a step further we took the long lever arm car and Added ball bearings and place at the graphite and that set a new record for us at 50 feet so if you only have one hour to make your car And you want to have a good showing you can use a long lever arm like this in conjunction with the CD wheels To give you a mechanical advantage of about one over 360 and then use ball bearings at the axles or just apply some graphite and you're gonna do pretty well Next we figured if long lever arms make it travel slower and therefore further. We should do a super long lever arm But it only made it to here which was worse than even the short lever arm car the problem was that it didn't Coast very Well because we had to make it really big, which means it's more.

Heavy, which means more friction You know this already intuitively because it's harder to push a heavy object on a table than a light object because there's more friction Resisting you so principle. Three is to make it lightweight I love this example though because it shows you need to balance these principles if you take any one of them too far Then another principle will creep in and start penalizing you. It's an optimization problem And that's what makes the mousetrap reasoner's such a great project That's also why testing is so important so tweaking and testing different things like Allen I did is critical for honing in on the sweet spot for your specific design next we tried this big wheel design which is a popular approach the Strategy here is the wheel is? 56 Times larger than the wheel axle so when you combine it with the lever arm you get a built in mechanical advantage of one? Over 840 and that's the equivalent of her arm That's two and a half feet long But without needing the big heavy car that seems like a good deal and as such it was our best car yet? And made it all the way to here the downside is that it takes energy to get a big wheel like that? Rotating it's called rotational inertia Here's a demo I built to showcase his principle these two wheels are identical except this one has the steel weights placed at the outer edge of the wheel Versus near the axle this means it has a higher Rotational inertia so when we spin them both identically the one on the right starts spinning faster And will reach a higher max speed, but the one on the Left will Coast for longer by having bigger Heavy wheels you're basically using them as a temporary storage for your energy And then you give it back during the coasting phase the problem with this is anytime you transfer energy You lose some going back to the cups a little splashes out each time you pour it no matter How slowly you do it? So instead of pouring your spring energy into a big cup and then eventually getting it back in the coasting phase. It's better Just to have reasonable size wheels and just have one slow pour directly near the final cup of making your car move Additionally big wheels like this can be hard to steer so principle four is to reduce rotational inertia This is also why you see people do this to their wheels sometimes It's an effort to keep the wheels large in diameter to get that built-in mechanical advantage But to make them wait less to reduce the energy given to rotational inertia so the final test we ran was Al's world record car which travelled an Astounding 600 feet when he set the record he did some crazy things like using jeweler's bearings on the axles But the real secret is this pulley here in the middle if we look at the ratios and calculate the mechanical advantage from the lever To the pulley to the wheels we're looking at one over four thousand six hundred and eight it's the equivalent of a 16-foot Lever arm or back wheel four and a half feet in diameter But without the downside of the extra weight or wasted rotational inertia This thing barely crawls along it's hard to even see the spring lever arm moving as this back spins It's really hard to beat a design like this And now we'll quickly go through the speed car principle since most of the same principles apply the biggest difference is this time we want To access all the energy from the spring in a short burst right at the beginning Because the finish line is only 15 feet away So it doesn't make sense to have a really small mechanical advantage like the pulley car here We want it much closer to the direct force of the spring itself Which would be mechanical advantage one problem is if we did that the wheels would slip so you basically want to incrementally Increase your mechanical advantage by making your rear axle thicker and thicker with tape until your rear wheels start to slip slipping is bad of course because that's waste of energy because your Wheel is spinning without actually moving your car forward It's helpful to zoom in and use the slow-mo on your phone to see if your wheels are slipping or not this means having good Traction on your rear wheels is important because means you can have higher forces Before you start to slip these squishy foam wheels work great I just like with the distance car Reducing friction by using bearings or graphite will definitely help as well making it lightweight because Newton's second law teaches us that heavier things are Harder to accelerate just like you throw a baseball further than a heavy bowling ball and Smaller diameter wheels not only help by keeping your mechanical advantage closer to one but you don't have time to give energy to these big Wheels and then get it back through coasting you want all that spring energy to go directly into making your car go forward Okay, so those are the basic principles before we head to the west coast mousetrap car championships.

I'll just mention I put a list of 10 practical quick build tips in the video description for example You should soak your bearings in WD-40 to remove all the grease the grease is useful if the bearings are actually seeing a lot of load But since these cars weigh next to nothing It's only gonna slow it down Iced also mentioned that my buddy al has an amazing website called www.Docfizzix.Com or you can buy all the parts I show today to experiment and come up with your own unique design. I also put that link below here we go For this competition the objective was to travel forward 15 feet And then returned back and stopped as close to the exact same spot you started in the least amount of time those moves may seem complicated But you can switch from forward to reverse by simply switching the direction you wrap up your axle halfway through and you can stop at a certain point by using a wing nut On a threaded axle so given the rules your design choices should foster both speed and precision about half the designs relied on Preconceived notions and use CD wheels which are a real bad choice here because you're not looking for distance They have more rotational inertia and poor traction The winning team car which I won't show here because the finals are next month really focused on precision They use ball bearings small foam wheels and they made their car body out of Aluminum it weighs more than balsa wood, so it did cost more energy to friction But there's plenty of energy in the spring for only traveling thirty feet So it was worth the trade-off for the extra rigidity and repeatability they also told me they tested and tweaked their design for six months They're just awesome to hang out and see all the various design approaches Hopefully you learn enough by now to give you a solid foundation for your own unique design So you can, build tests, tweak like crazy, and then dominate the competition I spend way too much time making these dumb videos But I can't help it since I sort of get obsessed because I'm passionate about the content Skillshare.Com not only help make this video possible But their site is full of people just like me except on any topic imaginable Take graphic designer, Aaron Draplin from Portland, Oregon, for example This guy is a savant who became famous for his amazing logo work and design philosophy He's a great teacher, and he's hilarious I learned a ton from going through his course. Let me tell you shooting conditions are
tough this is like Le Mans plus cows, minus a sanctioning body. Absolutely nothing
prepared me for what it's like driving across India I'm Alex Roy, I'm Ed Niedermeyer and
we're here at beautiful downtown Chennai on the east coast of India about to
drive this Renault kwid almost a thousand miles to the west coast to
Mumbai previously known as Bombay did you know that? -- I did know that. I usually
cover autonomous vehicles for the drive but there's no better place to
experience human driving than here in India. To an outsider it looks like
complete chaos something that at least today no machine could possibly learn.
Can two Americans who've never been to India actually make it cross country
given the incredible traffic the absence of any traffic law it seems and the
cows.

This is such a bad idea. Here in the beautiful downtown Chennai about to
go to Renault dealership to see what it's like to get a new car. Oh wait who's
this. One of the best things about India is that if you're an animal lover
especially a lover of cows you get this cows everywhere everywhere this is something else I'm the principal
of Renault children meet the delivery coordinator
so what you first see is that they'll first unveil the car so we'll have like
a gray satin power which is covering the car and then we'll do a small which our
ceremony and which is basically to welcome the new member of the family so
it's basically to give good luck and prosperity to the family and under each
of the tyre you see and lemon so basically our sellers we start the
engine they'll run the lemons over till dedicate all the bad omens and bad eyes
and all of that so that's a belief of Indians and a'right after that what we
did was we cut a cake for them to welcome into the Renault family and then
there's a service advisor who give us a brief about how to drive the car and
about the service of the car and so on you ever get that feeling like these
chicanes exist only so the police can sell advertising on the chicane
barriers.

-- I would rather cops work off the
advertising business model than the traffic ticket model. What makes
the Kwid great, value meter absolutely 100 percent absolutely and so, the Tata
Nano is a $4,000 car -- That looks
like a $2,000 car -- Which of course was what its price point was supposed to be at a
certain point when you imagine what a car that starts at $4,000 would be like
you don't imagine this your imagine is gonna be jump but actually try yeah I
mean like a Tata Nano exactly which we have seen some of those on the road here
and let me tell you I would be terrified let's talk about what you get for $4,000
so you get open an 800cc motor for the manual transmission five speeds and a
truck and four wheels it's more like a big hacker has twice as much cargo
capacity as like the other cars in its price range and this is the option of
primer edition is that it has a 1 liter engine
yep I think spelling nineties if I lived in India I would absolutely
be happy on in this car yeah and that's the thing is you know
the person we're driving is about $8,500 so quite a bit more and honestly
everything I like about this car you can get with two option boxes as the 1 litre
engine is is the option box I've acknowledged it I check first and then
AC. Let me tell you shooting conditions are
tough the GoPros are all overheating it's well over 100 degrees the in-car
power is well it's got one power plug we have a long way to go literally any time
we make to Mumbai will be a record at this point I just want to get there in
one piece Check Point to somewhere a few hours
west of Chennai I can't say it's been a tough Drive I'm suffering some kind of
ailment and Sweetie Meyers taking over we are getting coconut water which is
probably very hygienic it's 5:40 p.M. Local we're less than halfway to Hubli
which is less than halfway to Mumbai which means that we're barely a quarter
of the way and we've been on the road for 10 hours every electronic device
I've got has overheated the kwid is an amazing car but it has one problem it
only has one 12-volt outlet and one USB.

Port and it charges devices very very
very slowly other than that it's one of the best cars I've ever driven that's a
good thing because I'm gonna be spending the next 20 hours in it arriving at
least 12 to 15 hours behind schedule in Mumbai somewhere between 1/2 and 3/5 the way to
the halfway point ooh bleep we're gonna have to stop tonight there's no way we
can go all the way to Mumbai in one shot the traffic in India is just absolutely
too terrible luckily our convoy which includes our
support vehicle and another quit is with us I grew up in New York City I thought
I'd seen everything I've been in Mexico Thailand Morocco absolutely nothing
prepared food for what it's like driving across India 9 o'clock 13 hours after
leaving Chennai we're so far behind I've lost track we're gonna stop in Hubli
overnight which is halfway of the entire distance I thought I could drive alone
before I arrived in India thank goodness Peter Meyers here and we've got support
vehicle and a guide car this is like l'm all plus cows - a sanctioning body
indian drivers are the least law-abiding but possibly the best in the world definitely feels like the middle lane is
the safest doesn't it laughs lane has people with like tractors with no lights
people and the right lane has tractors with no lights
oncoming cars and people on scooters yeah we literally just had someone help
me tell you the driving I just saw him do absolutely terrified me I kilometers
which is 70 80 miles an hour which is about the maximum comfortable speed in
this car when I say comfortable I mean I. Would have I've been sleeping through it
I would have been happy that was which you were earlier by the way let's let's
end this conversation I'm awake now so just like the freeway
thing I was I'm so done with that this is fresh machine learned that a fight hey is this it
it is Wow we've arrived in Hubli Niedermayer
did an incredible job of driving that last stage especially we saw it
especially after the support team lost us and took off or disappeared and we
now have game of Google Maps which was pretty hairy that that last thing I've
been to Morocco and Thailand and Baja let me try I've never seen it a fight
break out in the street that almost in Kolff the car that was some hairy hairy
intersection with absolutely zero signage no lights or nothing just kind
of go out into it you kind of go around giant bus and someone coming let's just
say I'm really glad you were driving here in whom Bali India they're many
amazing things to see all of which I've missed because I've arrived five hours
ago and I've got to leave from Mumbai however there is this Treat in the
penthouse of the president hotel taxidermy as you know I love taxidermy
there's no higher love of nature than taxidermy and now it's just a big plush
toy let me say it is not a modern country
this is a real superhighway in here like I figure in sentence 200 kilometers from
Mumbai and I couldn't help but notice this gas stations lovely architecture
also that this is the petrol side that's the diesel side all you meiotic
drivers are slow car fast momentum car use every bit of speed in road
you're talking about you've driven anything in India on an open I can't go back to racing I cannot
believe we're actually racing what is going on in India literally everybody is
basically driving their cart the South Country the last stretch
before reaching Mumbai is no less intense as the roads improved but the
car continues to perform without so much as a hiccup it's clear this is a car
designed and marketed to the very specific needs of India tough minimalist
and affordable and definitely not autonomous this is what ever a no-quit
looks like after driving a thousand miles across India the car in perfectly
but nothing and I mean nothing could have prepared me us to automotive
journalists with racing experience but what it was like to drive from Chennai
to Mumbai between the cows the jaywalkers the road conditions the other
drivers the monsoons this was absolutely the most difficult thing I've ever done
in my life in a car and it could not have been done without this Renault kwid
but the real hero of the story is actually the driver of the second
Renault kwid the car that actually beat us at every stage all the way across
India to the finish line of Mumbai and the driver of that car is Sen seal Kumar
and let me tell you a sense he'll know rain Karthikeyan is a coward absolutely
without a question the greatest driver in India has to be you I've never been
beaten in a head-to-head chase like this one all my respect all my respect
brother seriously the man after two days in almost a thousand
miles of barely contained chaos I've never been so sure about how good human
drivers can be in the words of yuan Musk humans are underrated Silicon Valley is
investing billions of dollars in self-driving cars some think they're
inevitable and I completely agree the problem with self-driving cars are
the edge cases the things you cannot predict things like a row of ducks in
the Sahara 48 hours in India made it very clear to me that this entire
country is an edge case you could even call it an edge country however long it
takes to develop self-driving cars for the US market in India add 20 years
actually add 50 based on what I've been told by people working on the problem
here it could be a hundred you.

In this episode of Mighty Car Mods we are
going to check out this guy's car which I can pretty much guarantee will have
nothing on my mad Evo. When you got $3000 in Australia Martin, and you want to buy a car with it that's turbo and manual there ain't a whole lot of choices But occasionally you look down and sitting right there at your feet is a nugget Isn't it,  just a big brown nugget but in it thats not corn, it's gold isn't it Martin and when you pull that apart and you look at that gold and you stretch it out and you realise you can wrap yourself in it and then look through it's glistening face what's on the other side of it is a
world of untold fortunes, discovery and magic and that is exactly what happened
when I found this car so in this episode I'm going to introduce you to the car that is going
to annihilate. Annihilate, decimate, what's the word when you poo? Desecrate? Desa defecate it's going to my car's going to defecate all over Marty's car. That's basically whats going on so here it is ladies and gentleman I
introduce to you his lack of vocabulary the defecator Hello Martin, Hello Mate How you going mate I'm good, that looks exciting, what's going on there? How weird is Australian money Currency you know Australia money they made it like this way because its  unbreakable like you can't rip it Did you just rip it? Yea Isn't that where you buy Isn't that where you buy and sell cars from, from Maccas? Sure Need that RTA form, computer, monies Let's go buy a car make sure you check the dude's ID. That will dominate all Evos Awesome man Turbo No, no, not your car - mine. Turbo Manual Registered And running by the sounds of it, I don't if my Stancer would make it Two Door Yea see, thats the good thing. When you buy a car and they have to drive it 10 hours then you know it actually works Unless their mate just tipped them off the back of a tow truck.

Remember when I bought my GTI-R. That sucked. He drove it to me and said "Yea, Yea the cars totally fine. And then we got about 2 kilometres before it just blew up Overheated.

That sucked Man, let's go Yea let's go man Ohh, Sorry I'm a bit distracted by how I actually do gotta meet him in like 10 minutes Oh, OK , alright because he had to drive a long way to get here there is
some saving grace in that I've literally only seen a photo of that big on the
Internet haven't seen interior photos haven't

won't come out until it's in reverse then you click again and pull the key out,  the car is now locked in reverse Ohh, Thats cleaver. So you can move the steering wheel but
your cars in reverse, no matter what. Which is pretty cool. ABS, heated seats,
air conditioning, stereo The paint is perfect dude 5 speed manual and look at this big chunkyness, now I'm gonna put the bonnet for you Martin It couldn't be more different than

Undo these two and drop that out the whole of the front of the card is comes off so you can work on the engine like it's really smart it's really cool.

So it is two door, look at the fuse box like it;s just everything is really clear
everything you need to know right there even the wiring, even what they wrap the wiring in is that high quality cloth tape it's just quality man. This is an expensive car back in the day. actually kind of Saab's heyday in a way, like these were really really popular I remember as a kid seeing them everywhere. I mean I guess they have died out You every been in one or driven one? No never been in one It's not slow when you look on the internet for turbo cars under $3000 that are manual see the fan speed doesn't control the fan How do you do just face That but that doesn't make any difference
you control it with this Oh that's nice, that's really nice I don't understand it Um but yea when you do a search online for turbo manual cars for under $3000 not much comes up It's one of those things I think now not many people are into them and by not many people I'm talking relative to if you're into Skylines or Minis or Bugs or any of those cool cars Front wheel drive, imagine if this was rear wheel drive Oh they would be all over the place But it's hard to get parts in Australia - you have to get them from ebay or you have to get them from overseas there's a place down in Melbourne that supplies parts for them it's not easy but also the people that are really really into them and those
three guys have a bit of a monopoly on parts which is probably why this one's so tidy cause if you're gonna be into a car that much like, you're gonna look after it aren't you? Yeah, that's right.

I mean, it's one of those things as well you gotta be resourceful, you gotta learn how to fix it yourself and, um, for me, my thing again as usual you know, is I've had a mild interest in them and the thing is, it's so cheap to give people an understanding of, you know, what this is I think, you know, in Australia average wage is what, $700 a week or something like that? Thereabouts. So, you know, save up for a month and you could get one! It's kind of, you know, they're cheap - for what they are. But then they're expensive cause I'm sure upkeep and keeping them running is gonna cost a lot. What I think is hilarious about all this you bought the car I thought I would buy and I bought the car I thought you would buy? Yeah, isn't that funny? Like, you know what I mean? I was like, I coulda gone on something like this something weird and obscure and like, really nice.

But instead I went the complete other direction and got something I'd never buy. Which is good. I'm really happy about it . Well, I also got something that, in a way, I would never buy.

choosing the BMW right now? I have priorities right now in terms of, I want to buy a house and for me, a car is not as valuable as a house.

Your top tips for buying and running a car
Come up with a budget that you're comfortable with in the first place and stay with that budget. Try and determine before you purchase a car how much you feel you can afford. The less you finance, the better. We needed a decent car.

It would have cost us too much money. The car loans from work are quite cheap in relativity so we went via that route. We've always gone for used, but the cars we've had,
we've generally gone for a car that's a couple of years old because they drop their value quite a bit and then actually you've got a fairly new car but you're not paying an extra five, 10 thousand pounds
on top of that for a brand new car. Probably try and put as much of a deposit on the car as possible even though you wouldn't want to, sort of, let go of your money.

It might mean that you end up paying less in the long run. You've got to tax it, you've got to MOT it, service it
and there's all those things but one of the things that I found with my car
that I hadn't realised is kind of the extra jobs where, you know,
the general maintenance of the car... To have a pot of money for those, you know, situations. When you decide you're going to buy a car you actually research what the insurance is going to be in the first place.

We will shop around, so if our insurance company
then puts the premiums up we will make sure that we shop around. People just think about petrol but, you know, all the time the servicing
and everything else and surprise things that come with the servicing
and that sort of thing. I think never underestimate what a car ownership... The costs that are involved..
