World's First Car!

- I am about to drive
the world's first car. This was invented by Karl
Benz, patented in 1886. Of course, this is not the
real thing, this is a replica. But I've partnered with Mercedes to make a video about car safety.

- Yeah. (Laughs) - Right? There's not a lot of safety here. Safety would come later. You ready? - Yeah! I trust you.

(Engine sputters slowly) Awesome! - I'm driving the world's
first motor vehicle. When he made his patent, what
did he call this invention? - Patent Motorcar. This is the gasoline tank. The only place in Germany
where you could actually buy ligroin, or gasoline,
back then were pharmacies.

They sold it not as a cough
medicine, don't worry. They sold it as a stain
remover, a washing agent. In Germany, there's still
a word, Waschbenzin, washing gasoline, but no one really knows why it's called like that. Benz had an early thing for safety.

His ignition is a really modern one, because in here there's a battery inside which was fairly new back then. And, of course, igniting
the gasoline oxygen fumes with an electric spark is much safer than if you go with your lighter there and you're trying to ignite a whole thing. Let's say the most
important part, or course, is the cylinder with the piston. And the piston moves front and back.

- This is a single cylinder engine. - Yeah, a single cylinder engine. This is the cooling water tank, and of course what's really important, it's the oil reservoir. Lubrication is really
important, because you can see everything's open here, and so all the time you lose a lot of oil, and for my colleagues it's always a big fuss cleaning this thing up.

This the drive belt. - Right. - It's not just a drive
belt, it's also your brake. It's leather, so you can
imagine if you do brake a lot you get problems with the leather band.

The flywheel here we
need for the ignition. We need it to start it. (Engine sputters) - Wow! (Laughs) - Okay, see, that's really simple. We don't have a lot of stuff here.

- Yeah. - We just have the steering crank, and this is our gas and our brakes. - Okay, you're moving us into gear. - Yeah.

- Whoa! (Engine sputters) This does feel fast. - Oh, it even goes, ahh, faster. - Whoa! (Both laugh) The top speed of this vehicle
was 16 kilometers per hour, that's about 10 miles an hour. - We can go fast.

- It feels faster than I was expecting. (Engine sputters) Just 16 years later, this car could go 80 kilometers per hour. This car in 1928 could already
go 192 kilometers per hour. By 1938, cars had gotten incredibly fast.

This car right here set a record of 432.7 Kilometers per hour. That's almost 270 miles per hour, and another driver trying
to beat that record died the same day. And to this day, no one has
beat that car on a public road. The automobile revolutionized
transportation.

It allowed people to travel
faster than ever before. But that also created a really
difficult physics problem, which is that if you're moving
fast and you need to stop or you hit something, you have to decelerate incredibly rapidly and that creates huge forces
on the people inside the car, and causing injury and sometimes death. And as more and more cars came on the road and traveled faster and faster, the number of fatalities increased, peaking in a lot of developed
nations in the '70s. But then scientists and
engineers embraced this challenge and figured out new, innovative ways to create cars to minimize those injuries.

To improve safety, regular crash testing began in the late 1950s. But what amazes me is, the crash test dummy really
hadn't been perfected yet. So actual scientists and engineers drove the cars in crash tests. - People like me actually started to do first testing with themselves.

Certain accelerations,
how much you can suffer, I mean before you get any injuries. Of course, today this
would be impossible to do. - But when they finally did
develop crash test dummies, well then people weren't
driving the cars anymore so they needed a different
way to propel the vehicle. And so they used this, a hot water rocket, to propel the car into all
sorts of crash test situations.

One of the first major safety innovations that was introduced in a car like this in 1959 was crumple zones. That is, regions in the
front and the rear of the car that were designed to collapse
in the event of an accident. I remember when I was a kid,
hearing about crumple zones thinking that was a ridiculous
idea to improve safety. I mean, why would you
want your car to collapse? But the point is to increase the distance over which
the deceleration occurs, and in doing so, you
actually reduce the magnitude of the acceleration and so you reduce the forces on the passengers inside.

And that is what saves lives. - This vehicle has done a
64 kilometer per hour crash, frontal impact, against
a deformable barrier. This is what we classically
call the crumple zone. - But it's this beam here
that's designed to crumple? - Exactly.

So this takes away a lot
of energy by crumpling. The passenger compartment
itself is designed with different steel qualities, if you want, high strength and ultra
high strength materials, so that it's getting stiffer
and stiffer as closer as you get to the passenger compartment. - One of the biggest
challenges for car safety is Newton's First Law that
says whatever is moving at a constant speed will tend to maintain that constant speed. So if a car hits something,
the people inside maintain their constant speed,
fly through the windshield, and suffer a very high deceleration
when they hit the road.

This is why seatbelts are so important. They ensure that you stay in the vehicle and decelerate with it. You know, when seatbelts
were originally introduced, they were an option, something
you could pay extra for. But once we realized
just how useful they are and how they save lives,
well, they became standard and now they are mandatory.

Now, airbags were made
available by Mercedes-Benz for the first time in a
serious production car in 1981. And again, the idea is similar. In a head-on collision, you
want to stop the driver's head from accelerating too fast
into the steering wheel, and that's what the airbag does. It allows that acceleration
to take place over a larger distance and
therefore at a lower rate.

So it helps preserve the driver's head. - What you can also see is,
look at this tiny gap here. You can barely get your
fingers in between. - So that steering column has collapsed.

- Exactly. And it has collapsed in a designed way. So after you reach a
certain force threshold, then the driver basically pushes away the entire steering column,
including the airbag, by taking away energy. And what you want to do as an
engineer for restraint systems is that you want to basically
connect the driver, passenger, and the occupants as tightly
as possible to the car in a way that you have the
most time to decelerate.

- Seatbelts, crumple zones, and airbags are all passive safety features. They're passive in that
they assume a collision is occurring and they're just trying to reduce the acceleration
on the passengers inside. But there are also active safety systems, like the anti-lock braking system, or ABS, which was introduced by Mercedes in 1978. The idea with ABS is to
give you more control so you may be able to swerve
the car and avoid an accident.

The way ABS works is by
allowing the wheels to rotate rather than locking them up, and having the wheels
slide across the ground as might happen with
traditional braking systems. So, with ABS the wheel is allowed to turn, and then it's braked hard, and
then it turns a little more, brakes again. And by doing that in quick succession you allow the wheel to
stay rolling on the ground and maintain static
friction against the road. That actually increases
the frictional force and increases your ability to decelerate and also steer around a collision.

So ABS was a huge improvement
over past braking systems. All of these innovations have dramatically improved road safety. But there's always more to be done. And I got to take a look at Mercedes Benz Intelligent
Drive technology, which is what they're doing right now to improve safety,
performance, and convenience.

whole life. (Driver laughs).

Why Do Electric Cars Only Have 1 Gear

Hello everyone, and welcome. In this video we will be answering the question why do electric cars only have one gear. This will be the first of a five-part series brought to you by Formula E, who I've partnered with to talk about the engineering behind electric cars. I had the opportunity to get behind the scenes at the New York City ePrix and was able to chat with team principals, hang out in engineering rooms during qualifying, and even learn from this Year's champion Lucas De Grassi.

Now the topic at hand is why electric cars use just a single gear and don't have traditional transmissions like you'd find paired with internal combustion engines. While it might be more appropriate to ask why do gasoline engines need gears, electric motors can get away without numerous gears because they are high reving, remain fairly efficient across a very broad rev range, and produce a great amount of torque at low RPM. While a gasoline engine will need to have multiple gears to reach a top speed an electric motor can easily be geared specifically for that top speed, and still be useful at lower RPM. For example, in Formula E, the cars typically won't go any faster than 225 Km/h or about 62.5 M/s.

The electric motors are capable of spinning at about 20,000 RPM, so we can do some quick math based on the tire data to see what our gear ratio might be. The rear tires have a diameter of 0.68 Meters, multiplied by Pi gives our circumference. We'll divide 20,000 RPM by 60 to turn revolutions per minute into revolutions per second and now we can solve for the gear ratio, which turns out to be 11.4. This means that if we have an electric motor that revs to 20k RPM with a gear reduction of 11.4:1 We could drive this electric car from zero Km/h at zero RPM to 225 Km/h at 20,000 RPM.

And since many electric road cars have top speeds limited to less than 160 Km/h You can see how one gear would easily be enough even if the motor was lower revving or if the gearing was more aggressive. Well what happens if we were to take this same gear ratio of 11.4:1, And match it with an internal combustion engine with a redline of 6,000 RPM. Now yes, in racing you'll find gasoline engines with much higher red lines but for road cars 6,000 RPM is a perfectly normal red line, while road cars with electric motors are still high revving. At 6000 RPM with a gear ratio of 11.4:1 The gasoline engine would only be able to drive the car up to a top speed of 67.5 Km/h It would need much taller gearing in order to reach the top speed of 225 km/h In order to reach that top speed, it would need a gear ratio of 3.4 But what if we then wanted to drive at 20 Km/h? At 20 Km/h, with a gear ratio of three point four between the engine and the wheels the engine would only be spinning at 530 RPM.

Far too low for the engine to operate and even if it could it would have very little torque. Hence, internal combustion engines use gears to keep the engine within the appropriate power band, and still allow for the car to travel at any of the desired speeds. Since electric motors are so high revving, and efficient across a much wider rev range, a transmission simply adds complexity, cost, weight, and efficiency losses, with little added benefit. Now does this mean that there's never a need for electric cars that have multiple gears? Actually no, and in Formula E.

There are a wide range of strategies used. While this season's team champion was Renault, who used a single speed, the drivers Champion was Lucas De Grassi, who was driving a three-speed Audi. So what are the advantages of adding a few gears? To better understand this we need to look at an electric motors power curve. In Formula E, during the race power is limited to 170 kW.

At 0 RPM, because horsepower is a function of torque multiplied by RPM, power is 0. Power gradually increases until flatlining at the limit allowed by the series. Now for super low speeds, you can see that you're not able to put down the full amount of power that the series allows which means there's some opportunity here to gain an edge. As long as traction allows for it, more aggressive gearing means you can spin the motor up faster.

You'll have more wheel torque, can accelerate faster, and will be able to get into peak power faster than if the gearing were taller, meaning you're accomplishing more work. In scenarios such as the start of the race, or during very low speed corners, this can play to your advantage. Gearing can also be dependent on the motors used. Smaller motors tend to have less torque, so multiple gears can be used to compensate.

Larger motors, or pairs of two motors, will have more torque and can easily get away with just a single speed. With relatively low top speeds needed, high rev limits, and a wide efficient rev range, all of these features make it possible and beneficial for electric cars to use just a single gear ratio. What Would A World With Self-Driving Cars Look Like

Hey there and welcome to Life Noggin! When sci-fi writers think of the future, they
tend to think of flying cars and human-like robots that do our work for us. And while were not quite there yet with
either of those, were getting close to a different innovation -- self-driving cars. In fact, companies like Google and Tesla are
already working on these! Its possible that within the next ten or
twenty years, these cars will become common, and our roads might even become safer. I mean, looking at the numbers, about 1.2
/Million/ people die every year from traffic accidents and around 94% of those accidents
are caused by human-error.

So, its possible that well-made self-driving
cars could drastically decrease that number. But also, these cars could make driving possible
again for people who couldnt drive otherwise, like the visually-impaired or elderly. And on top of all that, think of how much
you could get done during your daily commute! I could finally read that Game of Thrones
book everyone talks about! Or, ya know, I could just sleep more which
is probably what Id end up doing. But, Im getting a bit ahead of myself.

Lets first figure out how these cars will
even /work./ This is probably obvious, but these cars first
need a GPS system to get a rough idea of where they are and where they need to go. They also have a bunch of sensors to constantly
scan the area around the them, looking for any hazards -- whether thats another car,
a bicyclist, or even a rogue bird! For Googles self-driving cars, these sensors
include a camera to see, and radar and lasers to map out the area. And these are constantly monitoring 360 degrees
around the car, which is much better than what a distracted driver could do. But arguably the most important -- and challenging
-- facet of self-driving cars is the software that makes them run.

This has to take in all the data from the
sensors and GPS -- and even things like traffic and weather conditions -- and make decisions
based on that. It determines how to steer, stop, and go,
and everything else involved in getting you from Point A to Point B. But of course, this technology isnt perfect
and inevitably, these cars will be put in a situation where a crash is unavoidable. And in some cases, the car will have to choose
between two evils -- like crashing into pedestrians or putting the cars passengers at risk.

In that case, what should it do? In a study, researchers found that most people
would rather the car sacrifice the passengers for the common good. That said, these same people would rather
/ride/ in a car that protected its passengers instead. So, theres a bit of a issue here because
what these people want self-driving cars to be like isnt what they would want themselves. What would you want in that case? A lot of companies want self-driving cars
to be road-ready by 2020.

What is 'New Car Smell'

Ah, man. New car smell, right? Imagine it. Breathe it in. That's the high life, yeah? *Title music* Most people find the unique aroma of a new
car oddly enticing, the olfactory equivalent of snuggling into a warm laundry.

People like it so much that they even replicate
it in air fresheners and those sprays you find in gas stations. But what exactly is this stuff? That is tough to determine. Not everyone reports the same sort of smell
when they talk about the scent of a new car. While scientists still arent sure exactly
what makes new car smell so fascinating or pleasant to humans, we do know a few things
about it: first, its not any one, single substance.

Cars are made of a wealth of materials, such
as polyurethane or polyester. These chemicals are designed to endure daily
wear and tear while also resisting changes in temperature and climate. So far, so good, right? Not so fast. While the materials themselves may not be
particularly terrible, by which I mean you can touch them without contracting some sort
of odd disease or bursting into flames, the stuff they produce can be downright dangerous.

The smell of a brand-new car is the result
of numerous chemical compounds from all these paints, plastics, lubricants, plasticizers
and sealants releasing into the air. This process is called outgassing. I know. Sexy, right? These compounds are collectively known as
volatile organic compounds or VOCs.

They have high vapor pressure and low boiling
points. This means large numbers of molecules evaporate
into the air. Some of these VOCs dont produce any sort
of odor whatsoever, but others are responsible for that intriguing olfactory mixtape known
as new car smell. And as appealing as they might smell, these
VOCs may also be hazardous.

Studies show that some of these volatile chemicals,
such as the ethyl benzene and formaldehyde found in paints and glues, can cause problems
like dizziness, headache, allergies or even cancer when inhaled in large enough quantities
or for long enough periods of time. So you can sniff that new Honda but for Petes
sake, dont huff it. This has caused some scientists to compare
inhaling new car smell to sniffing glue. At this point, scientists still havent
closed the case on new car smell.

We know some of these compounds are certainly
harmful, but experts dont agree on exactly how harmful a given compound might be. We do know that a great deal of these VOCs
luckily go away over time  although they can come back on hot days when higher temperatures
increase the rate of outgassing. One last point  not all new car interiors
are created equally, VOC-wise. Some are much less toxic than others.

You can find reports on the relative health
of your cars interior by checking with nonprofit groups such as the Ecology Center,
which publishes a Model Year Guide to New Vehicles annually. In the meantime, I have to ask: what does

Uniti - Electric carEquity crowdfunding 2017

Hi! We're Uniti, an electric car company with
big ambitions. We are really excited that the world is now
transitioning to clean, sustainable electric automotive. And the contribution that we want to make

south of Sweden, we have a strong engineering and product development culture.

Here, we are working tirelessly to develop
a vehicle platform that is sustainable throughout its life cycle. Starting from manufacture and to the end of
its life. But of course developing a vehicle platform
that just makes sense isnt enough to reach the masses. That challenge starts with design.

Our design processes has been an intensive
two years of research, where we have worked with a wide group of external stakeholders
and have the support from the best in the world. Now the next part of our design process requires
us to bring together a wide group of competences and stakeholders. From supply chain and manufacturing to engineering,
and branding and communications. And we have found that the best way to do
this in a fast and efficient manner is to use virtual reality.

Here at Uniti, we use VR on a daily basis
as a tool to develop and communicate our vehicle in the most lean and effective way possible. And once everyones happy here, it is time
to get our hands dirty and that is something we love to do here at Uniti because it is
so important in the development of a new electric vehicle platform, and it something that we
just love to do. Welcome to our prototyping workshop. So in this facility, we can develop and manufacture
everything up to full scale production prototypes.

Now, of course, there is a big leap between
prototyping and developing a vehicle for mass production. So here, we have a particular focus on designing
for manufacture. Our vehicle is manufactured in high performance,
light weight composite materials. We concentrate early on the manufacturing
processes so we make sure the vehicle is lean, sustainable and scaleable in manufacturing.

Now, all of this innovative mechanical engineering,
prototyping and electronics is great but there's one more special ingredient we need to bring
it all to life. Here at software development, we work with
some of the world's leading suppliers to integrate cutting edge research in computer vision,
autonomy, deep learning and cognitive science. We ensure that our systems architecture is
safe, secure and stable for the future of electric cars. And, we take special care to make sure that
the technology we built feels like an extension of yourself, just like your smartphone.

And of course, all of this creates a lot of
IP. We have developed an efficient innovation
management system, that has so far resulted in 7 patent applications filed and several

trips are less than 30 km? Thats why our vehicle include a small,
lightweight, portable and removable auxiliary battery pack that contains about 30 km
of range.

It is easily swappable, but it is also easily
chargeable at home, at the office or perhaps at a cafe in any normal power outlet. You can charge it in under one hour, and then
deposit that 30 km of range into the vehicle in under 10 minutes while you are
driving. You can top up the battery with 100 km
of range at any fast charging power outlet in under 10 minutes, and be on your way. The range is a reliable 300 km in
all weather conditions.

And we include a home induction charging option
for an option for a solar panel on the roof that can also trickle charge the battery. We include a lot of exciting features, like
a full screen smart heads-up display and other features that are designed to improve the
overall safety and modernize the experience of the vehicle. This is a really exciting journey to be on,

The true cost of a car

There are lots of important decisions to make
when buying a car: Do you need a truck for the farm or a small car for the city? How
important is gas mileage to you? What color do you want? Once you decide what car you want, figuring
out what you can actually afford can seem a bit complicated. Your monthly car payments
might be affordable, but you also have to keep in mind other costs youll have, like
insurance payments registration fees and unpredictable expenses like a sudden hike
in gas prices or the need for a big repair. So, before you begin to shop around for a
car, you might want to take a look at some of these costs so youre not caught off
guard. First lets figure out your budget.

On average,
people spend about fourteen to sixteen percent of their annual income, before taxes, on their
transportation budget. Thats a figure that includes all the expenses of owning a carnot
just your car payments, but your gas, insurance, maintenance and repairs, and everything else
as well. So for our example, lets use this as a
guideline, and look at what this might be for an annual income of fourty two thousand
dollars. To figure out your budget, well take sixteen
percent of fourty two thousand.

That gives you six thousand seven hundred twenty dollars
a year to spend on your car, or five hundred sixty dollars a month. So lets look at the costs involved in getting
a new, basic subcompact sedan that has a sticker price of about sixteen thousand four hundred
fifty dollars. Now for any car, there are plenty of extra
things you can get, like satellite radio or a sunroof, which can drive up the price, but
were going to forego the bells and whistles and stick to a basic model. And when you buy a new car, keep in mind that
there are often extra fees in addition to what you pay for the car itself.

You might
have fees for things like documentation, and destination charges for getting the vehicle
from the manufacturer to the lot. Your registration fees may also be included,
which can save you a trip to the DMV. Some of the fees youll encounter, like
registration, are non-negotiable because they are required by your state, but some things,
like documentation fees or the base price of the car, may be flexible and open to some
negotiating depending on where you buy your car. So lets say that after negotiating the
price of the car and the fees, and adding on your local taxes, youre paying sixteen
thousand seven hundred fifty dollars total.

And in this case, youre going to finance
the car entirely. That means youre not going to make any down payment or trade in
another car. If you get a six-year loan at a three point five percent interest rate,
looking at an online calculator, your monthly payments will be around two hundred sixty
dollars. But financing comes at a cost.

In this case,
you end up paying about one thousand eight hundred fourty five dollars in interest on
top of that sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty dollars of principal over the course
of your loan. So if you have the cash, you may consider buying the car outright. Or if
you have a few thousand to spend on a down payment, you could lower your monthly payments
and save in interest over time. But for this example, lets say you dont,
and youve got a two hundred sixty dollar car payment.

Then theres gas. Lets say this car gets thrity two miles
to the gallon. And on average, you drive about one thousand two hundred fifty miles per month.
Twelve fifty miles divided by thirty two miles per gallon gives us about thirty nine gallons
of gas each month. If gas is around four dollars per gallonthirty nine times fourwere
looking at about one hundred fifty six dollars a month on gas.

Theres also your car insurance. Insurance
prices are based on a number of factors including where you live your driving record the
type of car youre driving even your job. If youre figuring this out for yourself
you might want to look at an insurance estimator as rates can vary dramatically. Lets say
you use an insurance calculator, put in your info, and see that youll get a rate of
about one hundred dollars a month.

So, adding our monthly car payment of two
sixty and an estimated gas expense of one fifty six plus the one hundred for insurance,
we already have a total of about five hundred sixteen dollars per month. Now lets look at some more periodic expenses
you might have, like regular maintenance: generally speaking, every seventy five hundred
miles or so, its recommended that you rotate your tires and change your oil. If youre
driving one thousand two hundred fifty miles per month, thats about fifteen thousand
miles per year. Divide that by seventy five hundred miles, and it looks like you might
need to do this about twice a year and lets say it costs you about eighty dollars
or so each time for a total of one hundred sixty dollars per year, although some new
cars come with a service agreement that covers some of these basic maintenance costs for
the first few years.

Now going to a shop for regular maintenance
can be a hassle and you may wonderis it worth it? Well, skipping tire maintenance
and oil changes can cost you in the long run. A set of tires might last you longer if cared
for properly. And a new set might cost you around six hundred dollars. Not changing the oil will eventually wear
out your engine which could cost thousands to replace.

So that one hundred sixty dollars
a year may be worth it over time. For the first few years, with a new car, you
probably wont need to do much more maintenance than thisif you do, it might be covered
by your warranty. Youll also have to re-register your car
and probably get it inspected from time to time. Depending on your state, this could
be once a year or every few years and can cost fourty five dollars to three hundred
dollars or more.

Lets say your registration and inspection will cost about two hundred
dollars every two years, or another hundred dollars per year. So adding one hundred sixty for maintenance
and another one hundred for registration and inspection, we get two hundred sixty dollars
per year Divided by twelve months weve got, well,
about twenty two dollars per month. [Show math: 260/12=21.6667] And if we take our previous monthly expenses
which were five hundred sixteen dollars, adding twenty two weve got five thirty eight. Then looking at our original budget of five
hundred sixty dollars if we subtract five thirty eight for our monthly expenses, that
leaves us with twenty two dollars.

So, having calculated some of these costs
of car ownership, we can see that this car could be inside your budget. Now you may be thinking about that extra twenty
two dollars a monththats two hundred sixty four dollars a year. Why not accessorize? But having a little extra in your budget to
cover unexpected costs is a good idea. It may come in handy if theres a sudden hike
in the price of gas, or the cost of your insurance goes up.

And once your warranty runs out, youll
have to pay for any repairs you might have, like replacing a headlight or an oxygen sensor
or maybe even something bigger. So its a good idea to keep these extra
costs in mind when figuring out what you can spend. If your car payments alone put a strain
on your budget, you might find yourself the owner of a car you cant afford to drive.
And if a new car is too much for your budget, you might consider buying a used car, which

When you think of modified cars around the world, you might think of a drift car in the mountain roads of Japan. Or you might think of a V8 muscle car blasting down the quarter mile in the USA. A jacked-up four-wheel drive or ute in the outback of Australia. But when it comes to the ratio of modified to stock cars and the sheer resourcefulness and ingenuity of car owners and their mechanics, the number one place in the world  for modified cars is Cuba.

[MUSIC] MIGHTY CAR MODS CUBA. Cuba is located in the northern Caribbean. 200Km east of Mexico 150km south of the United States, and is home to around 11 million people. We are in Havana, the capital city, which features a unique and thriving car culture, which was used as an iconic location in 'Fast and Furious 8' So we've decided to come here to delve deeper into the unique car scene.

We're going to drive some crazy cars, plus meet the people who own them and keep them on the roads. From backyard workshops to Jungle mechanics, Cuba does cars, like nowhere else on the planet. Cuba's car culture is a fascinating blend of crazy 1950's American excess, and 1970's Soviet Utalitarianism. Colored by the local's can do attitude, to keep their aging cars on the road.

Thanks to Cuba's proximity to Florida, it became a holiday destination for wealthy Americans in the 1940's and 50's. With fleets of American land barges cruising the streets. It wasn't long before a young chap, called Fidel Castro, rose up and brought the government down with a revolution. Taking over control, from the 1st of January 1959.

This meant the supply of American cars and parts dried up overnight, due to Castro's communist government and links to the U.S.S.R. With America's export ban in place Cuba turned to their Soviet friends for vehicles, Buying Ladas, Polish Fiats, and even the odd GAZ or Zil luxury car. The trade restrictions meant Cubans couldn't bring in parts if something on their car broke, so they became experts at keeping their old cars going by any means necessary. This has lead them to become probably the most resourceful modifiers of cars on the planet.

Due to the trade embargo, Cubans had no access to the huge U.S. Classic car aftermarket parts industry. So many of the American classics have been refitted with cheap Kia and Hyundai diesel engines. It's also not uncommon to find cars being run by tractor engines or even stationary pump engines that have been converted to run a car.

Cubans are especially proud of their cars, because they're a symbol of hard work, and the vehicles become family heirlooms. It's not uncommon for families to pass down cars over decades and decades, with various different engine configurations and modifications keeping the car on the road. So let's hit the road, drive some cars and find out how against the odds these resourceful car enthusiasts keep rolling in Cuba. But firstly.

How are we going to get around? Well we've got our hands on this. This is a 1955 Chevrolet 150 Sedan. This is the up-spec Bel-Air, and back in the 50's, this could cost up to $2750 depending on which of the nine body styles you chose, and how you customized it. There were hundreds and hundreds of options on offer.

While you could get a straight-six engine, the big news in '55 was a brand new turbo fire 4.3L V8, known as the small block. Still in production today, some people say, over one hundred million small block V8's have been made since 1955. A unique feature of the '55 model year engine, was that oil filters were an optional accessory. But none of this applies to our particular car, Because powering us on this trip, is none other than a Toyota Diesel truck engine from Japan It can be tricky to navigate your way around the unique automotive culture in Cuba,.

Surprising my Mom with Her Dream Car!!!

Hey guys! ChrisFix here and today we're doing something special! This is something that I've been wanting to do for a while now And I just recently saved up enough money to do it. Today I'm buying my mom her dream car! Actually, that's where I'm going right now! I'm gonna go check out a car, test-drive it, and see if it's the one. Cars come Auto Trader cars direct doodle and many other major car buying websites with just one click so all I have to do is Scroll down here Hit that search button so even though the thunderbird's a rare car look at all the results that we got from all the different car Sites but to give you an idea I saw this car already had a bad transmission So I passed on that I saw this one But the radio didn't work it had dings and everything all over it so I passed on that Didn't see this car yet it is the Pacific Coast roadster But this is pretty pricey so instead we're gonna go check out this car right here He posted up a lot of pictures the car looks like it's in great shape I spoke to the owner on the phone, and I'm looking forward to checking this one out So thank you everyone who suggested this site It is definitely bookmark now And thank you very much Auto Tempest for supporting the video and my goal of getting my mom her dream car so now let's go Check out this car Alright, we are on our way to check out a 2004 for Thunderbird. The only issue is it's not the right color It's not that classic Thunderbird blue, but that's okay cuz it's like a Bluegreen It's a special edition either way the most important thing right now is to stay emotionally detached Don't be afraid to walk away if the car is no good and this car is gonna be a tricky one because I want it To be perfect.

This is a special gift for my mom, and I really want a nice reliable car and it looks like we are here check it out right over there and just rolling up on this I could tell this looks like a real nice car and This color looks awesome. I can't believe I was concerned about this looks so good my mom's gonna Love it the top has like a white pearl color to it. It's metallic looks so good mixed up with this like seafoam green It's like a Bluegreen metallic this also looks so good color is not going to be an issue So let's take a quick look at the car one thing that I saw coming around the corner are these headlights these definitely are going To need some restoration. They're yellow They just don't look good on this car and you could also see that the Thunderbird badge Here is a little chipped up, but that's easily replaceable one thing that you don't see chips are on the paint Which is great a lot of the cars that I saw had a lot of rock chips up here I don't see any and this just looks awesome and speaking of rock chips again I don't see anything on the glass the glass looks chip and crack free it does have a heated element in here so the front Windshield is heated.

Which is a nice feature and man this car just looks pretty good You can see it's well taken care of the wheels on this car a special edition wheel they aren't on any other Thunderbirds they have the matching color for the paintwork which is nice But one thing that catches my right now these brakes are shot the rotors are all grooved so it needs front brakes Let's go around and check the back see if it needs some back brakes, and yeah the back brakes are even worse This is grooved pretty good so the back brakes and the front brakes are gonna have to get replaced That's definitely something to keep in mind not a big deal. If you don't know how to do it I have videos on how to do that. It doesn't cost a lot We could get some top-of-the-line brakes on here for my mom so this car stops on a dime So let's just keep looking around the car good. We have the emblem here I don't see any dents or scratches which is great the paintwork really looks good on this I'm kind of excited about that and this car is just it looks really good.

I'm actually really excited about this I think this is a good possibility for a car that we might come home with today. Let's go speak with the owner Okay here we go All right, thank you very much So I got the keys and we could go and check out the car now just so that you guys know the owner isn't gonna be in the video I want to respect his privacy but he did tell me that I could take as long as I want filming the car and get all the shots and angles and Go for a test drive That's not an issue so I really appreciate that and the first thing that we're gonna Do is we're gonna check out the inside of the car now. I developed a really good and really helpful used car buying checklist I'll link it in the description It's free to download for you guys So if you're ever going to buy a used car it has everything that you need to check to make sure you don't forget anything I'm gonna be going through this myself as we check out the car, so let's go check out the interior now one thing I really like about this car is the retro futuristic Styling of it, so they take little cues from like the 50's such as these door cards that have the slots in them That's something you would see back in 1955 when the Thunderbird first came out and that's really cool now diving into the interior this looks great so far Want to take a better look one thing that you'll notice right away is this car is in great shape? I don't see any rips. I don't see any tears.

There's no cracks in the leather it just looks well taken care of and that is great because that means that the owner actually cared about the car and Maintained it and if this interior looks a little bit familiar. You're not going crazy That's because this shared the same interior as the Lincoln LS now They adapted little differences such as the white gauges and the blue needles and the blue thunderbirds sign some aluminum on the side here But basically this shares the same platform as the Lincoln LS and the Jaguar s-type both well-defined luxury vehicles which is awesome So there'll be plenty of parts available which is always a good thing one thing that caught my eye over Here is the plastic handle. It's like chrome wraps. You could see it's chipping off a little bit I do have a solution for that That's not a big deal not too concerned about that, but what I do want to check out next is the engine bay So let's pop the hood and the main thing we're going to be looking for under the hood is leaks and also making sure that The fluids are filled to the correct level I see a little bit of sweating here, but not leaks so that's fine That's where you fill the oil anyway the master cylinder is filled is a little low But we did say we need some brakes so that makes sense and we want to check our oil So let's remove the dipstick and what we want to see is the correct oil level and oil that's in decent shape So the oil is filled up to the first mark which is fine It doesn't look burnt or creamy it has a golden brown color which is typical and this looks good So everything looks good under the hood now.

We go for our test drive I've been driving this car around for a little while now, and it feels solid it takes turns nicely And you feel completely comfortable the whole Drive in addition to comfort this car has a good amount of power So you could accelerate effortlessly, here's what I'm talking about This Jaguar 3.9 Liter v8 makes 280 horsepower Which you could tell is plenty while accelerating fast is a lot of fun my favorite part of driving this car is the? Incredible ride quality this bridge is very bumpy yet the car floats along like it's on a cloud You could really tell when designing this car. They stuck to the Thunderbirds luxury roots, and man oh, man I could get used to driving this around so overall there's no squeaks the suspension is tight the steering feels good Everything works as it should so let's get back to the owners house and see if we could go home with this car today Now back from our ride. There's one last thing to do I checked everything on our checklist this car is just in great condition You could tell it's been taken care of and overall this is definitely the best Thunderbird that I've test-driven and seen so far but we do have to do one more thing I always scan the computer with a Bluetooth Obd2 scanner so that I know that there's no problems that are hidden from me this actually saved me once big time so go underneath The steering wheel and plug it right into the obd2 port then you could use your phone and do an all System scan and this has saved me big-time recently. I saw a nice blue Thunderbird.

It was in great shape I was ready to make an offer on it, but after scanning the computer I found out it had a bad transmission and then the owner found out later on that it would cost three thousand dollars to fix so thankfully I checked the computer and it's Done scanning everything so you can see we don't have any check engine codes. We don't have any ABS airbag Transmission codes all our electronic modules are good so this car passes the scan test now we could go make an offer To the owner so we're here with the owner, and I I really like the car test rover Everything's really nice needs a couple of things What are you asking for this car again fourteen nine fourteen nine, so it doesn't need a few things but again I like the car. This is awesome, so let's get home We're on our way home, but we do have to make a few quick stops first We need to go to the DMV to transfer the Pennsylvania title and get a New Jersey title and plates Awesome next let's go to the auto parts store we're walking in with an empty cart and leaving with the full one you should never let me go to the parts store alone and Finally I want this car to have a full tank of gas for my mom and one tank later. She's full.

Thank you very much So finally we made it back home with the car But we don't have much time and not only do we not have a lot of time But we have a lot that we need to do so let's get started first Let's change the oil so get the car and ramps and getting under the car for the first time this thing is Clean once you agree Cooper Okay, so let's change the oil start by removing the oil plug and drain the old oil out once it's all drained out tighten up the drain bolt and let's remove the old oil filter and Install a brand new one and I like to write down the mileage of the motor Which will help me remember the last time I change the oil finally add six and a half quarts of fully synthetic oil and we are done now Let's install a new cabin air filter So remove all the clips on the wiper shroud pop it open and look at all this dirt and debris That's in here now We can remove the old air filter Which just slides out? Out with the old and in with the new the new filter slides back into place like that Now the air coming from the cabin will be filtered and clean Speaking of clean air the engine also has to breathe clean as well so disconnect the wiring from the mass airflow sensor Unsnap the two clips and peel the intake cover upwards now We can slide out the old filter So out with the old and in with the new the filter slides back in then push the lid closed and finally reconnect the wires Good, so that's everything under the hood now. Let's go and install some new brakes first remove the wheel then the brake caliper And then the brake pads now remove the brake caliper bracket and finally the brake rotor Install the new rotor and the new brake pads and let's finish up by installing the caliper and torquing it down Finally put the wheel on lower the car to the ground and that's a one brake job done might as well spray down the wheel And clean them off while we're at it and finish off with some tire shine to finish the look of the clean wheels So that's one down. I got three more to go I'm going to do it to all four wheels Change the brakes change the rotors clean the wheel get some tire shine on there, and then we're on to the next step, which is Cleaning the engine bay use a microfiber towel to clean off all the dirt Then brush in some trimmer store and finally use a microfiber towel to give it a good buff to make the plastic look brand new Here's a before-and-after Beautiful next we're gonna give the car a quick bubble bath use a microfiber wash mitt to clean off the dirt and Finally wash all the suds away I'm also gonna wax the car so there's a nice protective layer on the paint so wax on wax off and Check out that shine that looks so good I could see my reflection But we don't have time to admire the reflection next we need to replace the peeling badge and to remove the emblem a little trick Is to use some fishing line the braided fishing line works great, and it's actually really sharp So we want to pull up towards the emblem not down towards the paint so you don't scratch the paintwork And then now you're just gonna work your way song back and forth towards the center of the emblem beautiful now Just get some alcohol on a rag and wipe the old sticky residue off and finally now We just need to align this emblem, and that looks good And now just press it down and it adheres right to the car and check that out that looks so much better than before With that old chipped away Chrome and speaking of chips away chrome. Let's go fix the chrome That's chipped away on the door handle inside We're gonna use a chrome vinyl wrap to coat the handle But first we have to remove as much of the peeling chrome as we can Once the Chrome's gone clean off the plastic with some alcohol Then we can lay our chrome wrap over the handle using heat from a blow-dryer will help shape it and cut away any extra material Now the one final squeegee look at that Beautiful and we are cutting it close timewise luckily the interior of this car is great condition We're not going to be able to get to the headlights unfortunately, and I think that's it I think we need to go right now.

Actually I almost forgot One last thing we got this awesome bow this is gonna go right on here, okay? Let's get this car out of here my dad's on his way home, and he'll be here in like five minutes cutting this close So the plan is I'm gonna hide around the block away from my house so my mom doesn't see the car My dad's gonna come home with my mom like he normally would park in his normal spot and go inside Once my mom's inside and settled in then I'll head over with the car So I'm just nervously sitting here waiting for my dad to call so I could bring the car around Okay, here we go.
